Chase Young on the move to a 3-4 under Brandon Staley, 'an edge player is an edge player'
The hiring of Brandon Staley signifies a shift in defensive philosophy for the New Orleans Saints. They're changing their base defense to a 3-4 after being a 4-3 under Dennis Allen, but Chase Young doesn't see it as a big deal. Especially not for him because "an edge player is an edge player."
Young discussed the biggest talking point on the defense after signing his new three-year contract: "At the end of the day, you're playing on the edge most of the time it's the same rules."
Typically in a base 3-4 defense, you'll have a player who will occasionally drop into coverage. Young's frame would suggest that wouldn't be his role often, so his role in the new defense would be to rush the passer and provide run support on most downs. That's what he was asked to do last year as well.
Beyond just his role, Young doesn't think the shift will be drastic because it odd front alignments are new to the Saints. "When we went to a different defense and I went to a 4i, that's basically a 3-4. It's kind of the same thing. It's just about who's on the edge."
Having these type of alignments on film should give new coaches a stronger template of the players' fits in the new defense. It should also help with some of the learning curve. They have some understanding of the principles of the defense, and now just have to lean further into it.
