The Las Vegas Raiders and quarterback Geno Smith have agreed on a two-year contract that could help pave the way for Brock Purdy's eventual extension with the San Francisco 49ers.
Smith's deal, first reported by NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, is a two-year pact worth $85.5 million with $66.5 million guaranteed per Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz.
Purdy isn't going to sign a two-year deal, so we can take that aspect of the contract off the table. What matters for the 49ers purposes are the $42.75 million average annual value which ranks 15th among current NFL QB contracts, and the $66.5 million in guarantees which ranks 14th.
If we double the numbers on Smith's contract and make it a four-year deal, that contract would look like this: four years, $171 million with $133 million guaranteed. If Purdy's deal looked exactly like this, his total value would be 15th, with his total guarantees coming in a respectable seventh.
San Francisco could circle those numbers on Smith's deal and inflate the total value to bring Purdy into the top 10. Instead of $171 million in total value, they could bump that number to $225 million (10th) for an AAV of $56.25 million (second).
There aren't any other big QB contracts scheduled to come down, so the market is as set as its going to be. Smith's contract was one last data point the 49ers and Purdy's agent could work off of.
