3 biggest takeaways for Sixers following latest road loss to Spurs
The Philadelphia 76ers dropped their third straight in a 128-120 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Friday. The Sixers dropped to 1-3 on their 6-game road trip with two more still to go and dropped to 23-47 on the season.
Philadelphia used a big third quarter to build a lead, but the Spurs were able to finish the job and walk away with a win. Once again, the Sixers were missing a laundry list of players as Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Paul George, and a slew of others were out with injuries.
Quentin Grimes had 25 points and a career-high 10 assists, Justin Edwards had a career-high 25 points, and Guerschon Yabusele had 23 points, nine rebounds, and five assists, for the Sixers. Ricky Council IV added a career-high 20 points and eight rebounds off the bench while Oshae Brissett added nine points.
Here are the three biggest takeaways after the latest loss:
Yabusele has best game in a while
Before shooting 11-for-16 against the Spurs on Friday, Yabusele had been having a tough time getting anything going. In his previous six games, he was averaging only 6.8 points and shooting 35% from the floor overall. He looked like himself in this one carving out space around the basket and was able to show what he has been able to show all season long. With 12 games left to play, Yabusele will look to continue building his free agency case. He is going to get paid this summer whether it's in Philadelphia or elsewhere for sure.
Edwards continues to grow
The undrafted rookie continues to take steps forward for Philadelphia. He was highly efficient against the Spurs shooting 9-for-14 from the floor and knocking down three triples. As time goes on, the Sixers will continue looking to him to take on more responsibility and he continues to show that he can shoulder the load. His ability to put the ball on the floor and get to his spots is impressive and he continues to make adjustments against the stronger opponents in the NBA.
Grimes is more than just a scorer
Yes. Grimes now has seven straight games of at least 25 points. That's very impressive and he deserves a lot of credit for that. With that being said, he continues to show that he's much more than just a scorer and a shooter. He can put the ball on the floor which draws a ton of defensive attention and he is able to put the ball on a dot to outside shooters. The 10 assists on Friday were just an example of his ability as a playmaker and Philadelphia should look to unlock more of that in the final 12 games of the season.
