Player grades: Sixers drop 3rd straight game with road loss to Spurs
The Philadelphia 76ers paid a visit to the San Antonio Spurs on Friday for the fourth of a 6-game road trip looking to get back in the win column. The Sixers entered on a 2-game losing skid after winning the opener of the trip and were looking to get back on the winning side of things.
It was a great battle by the Sixers. One has to give this team credit for battling and fighting hard despite the many pieces sitting on the sidelines, but the Spurs eventually prevailed 128-120 as Philadelphia dropped its third straight game. Jeremy Sochan had 23 points and nine rebounds to lead San Antonio on the night.
Quentin Grimes had 25 points and a career-high 10 assists, Justin Edwards had a career-high 25 points, and Guerschon Yabusele had 23 points, nine rebounds, and five assists, for the Sixers. Ricky Council IV added a career-high 20 points and eight rebounds off the bench while Oshae Brissett added nine points.
Here are the player grades following the loss:
Jared Butler: C-plus
After a miserable night shooting the ball in the loss to the Thunder, it was good for Butler to come out and see the ball go through the net a couple of times early. He had a nice cut to the basket for an easy layup and then knocked down a tough triple. He was able to make an impact on the defensive end as well with his aggression on that end.
Quentin Grimes: A
Once again, Grimes did some terrific things out on the floor. He had a sequence where he knocked in a triple, got himself a steal, and then found Butler for a triple in the early going to get the Sixers on track. He was a consistent source of offense in this one not only as a scorer, but as a playmaker as well. He did some good things as somebody who was something of an offensive hub for the Sixers in this one as the Spurs didn’t have much of an answer for him. The idea of Grimes next to Tyrese Maxey in the backcourt is tantalizing for this group.
Justin Edwards: A
The rookie had himself another solid outing. There were a lot of times in this when he was able to free himself up for an open look with his off-ball movement which further punctuates his basketball IQ. He had some nice moments on the defensive end and did some good things for Philadelphia in this one. He was efficient with his offense all night long and was very good in the second half. One has to believe Edwards will have a rotation spot solidified in the 2025-26 season. Possibly even as a starter.
Chuma Okeke: B-plus
Getting a start in this one, Okeke did some good things on both ends of the floor. He came up with some hustle plays to create extra possessions for Philadelphia while making some plays with his passing within the offense. He had some impressive defensive plays and he knocked down a big 3 in the fourth quarter to give Philadelphia some separation.
Guerschon Yabusele: A
It was a tough night for Yabusele in terms of shooting the ball. He struggled with his 3-point shot, but he was able to do some good things in this one. He was terrific in the paint and used his strength, size, and finesse to be able to muscle up for some looks around the basket. The Spurs offer up a lot of size and athleticism so that was a tough challenge for him, but he was able to hold his own defensively. There were a few tough moments in terms of rebounding, but he came up with some big ones in the second half to help the Sixers stay in front.
Ricky Council IV: A
The initial stint for Council produced some solid results. He hit a tough jumper off the dribble in the half-court before throwing down a highlight slam in transition. He was aggressive on the glass, didn’t settle for any bad shots or try to do too much on that end of the floor, and had some nice defensive moments as well. He knocked down some huge 3s after halftime as he was able to keep the scoreboard moving for the Sixers when things bogged down a bit.
Oshae Brissett: B
Moving back into a reserve role, Brissett got himself some easy buckets by moving well without the ball. He got himself two easy baskets by cutting off the ball and finishing at the basket. He made some big plays in the second half by using his physicality and shooting ability to contribute on the offensive end.
Jalen Hood-Schifino: C-minus
Once again playing the role of backup point guard in this one, Hood-Schifino committed some turnovers early that hurt the Sixers a bit on the offensive end. After a terrific night as the backup ball-handler in OKC, there were some tough moments for him in that role in this one. He also wasn’t able to find a rhythm from 3 as he has in previous games.
Lonnie Walker IV: Incomplete
In his first game back from a concussion, Walker had a solid night despite easing his way back into things. He did knock down a 3 in the second quarter and competed on both ends of the floor. He was ruled out at halftime after developing a minor headache as the Sixers want to be careful with him.
