Nick Nurse assesses Ricky Council IV after Sixers fall to Spurs
The Philadelphia 76ers may have fallen to the San Antonio Spurs 128-120 on the road on Friday night, but they were able to receive big games from a handful of players. They had four players score 20-plus points including Ricky Council IV who turned in a career night.
Council scored a career-high 20 points while shooting 6-for-9 from the floor and he hit three triples while also grabbing eight rebounds in the loss to the Spurs. This comes after Council had one of his worst games in the Wednesday loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder when he shot just 1-for-11.
It shows off a lot of toughness by Council to be able to get the job done and move on from a tough night in OKC.
"It's really big because, as a head coach, I was starting to get a little worried," coach Nick Nurse told reporters after the loss. "I was getting a little worried about him. I really was. Just more than anything, I keep saying this over and over, I want these guys to play well. This is their time and chance to play a lot of minutes and he just has been struggling. So it's good. It's really, really good."
It hasn't been an easy season for Council who was expected to be a part of the rotation in his second season in the league. Instead, he's been trying to re-establish himself and get back in the good graces of Nurse and the coaching staff.
With 12 games to go and a wide-open opportunity to play plenty of minutes, the Sixers want Council to play as hard as he can and show what he can do with the opportunities he's got at the moment.
"Hopefully, it'll give him some confidence to come out and do more of the same in the next one, but that’s a hell of a bounce back, because that was a rough one the other night," Nurse added. "I think that's a career-high form tonight. So probably a career-worst game followed by a career-best game is a good bounce back for him."
The Sixers will look for Council to continue taking another step forward when they face the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday.
