3 biggest takeaways for Sixers following latest home loss to Pacers
PHILADELPHIA -- It was another loss for the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday as they fell to the Indiana Pacers 112-100. They have now lost three in a row and are 22-44 on the season as they play out the final 16 games of what has been a miserable year for them.
The Sixers held a 16-point lead in the first half, but they were unable to sustain it as the Pacers turned it on and finished off a much-needed win for them. Indiana is locked in a battle for a top 4 seed in the East so it couldn't afford a loss to the Sixers.
Jeff Dowtin Jr. led the Sixers with a career-high 24 points while Adem Bona had 16 points and nine rebounds. Jared Butler had 17 points, Ricky Council IV added 12, Oshae Brissett had 14, and Guerschon Yabusele had five and 15 rebounds.
Here are the three biggest takeaways following the loss:
Dowtin continues to ball out
One bright spot for the Sixers as of late has been the play of Dowtin. The guard out of Rhode Island has played some good ball as of late as he topped his previous career-high of 20 that he had in his last outing on Wednesday. As Philadelphia continues to play out the string, it's important to get somebody like Dowtin some minutes. He and Butler can do some good things together as the Sixers look to evaluate who will be here and who won't as time moves forward.
"I think, again, I've said this before too, I've always kind of liked him," coach Nick Nurse said after the loss. "He really does, 25 to 35 almost every time he goes down to the G League. He got in a little bit of a numbers game here at the start of the season. You know, Tyrese (Maxey), Reggie (Jackson), and Kyle (Lowry), and him. It’s kind of tough to give him any stints at all, or any extended stints, and now he's just—he knows he's got to play a lot. He knows he's not coming out. Not much, right? That always helps, too."
New guys making their debut
The Sixers were able to see what they had in new additions Jalen Hood-Schifino and Brissett on Friday and the results were solid. While Hood-Schifino only shot 2-for-8 on the floor for five points, his ability to get into the paint was helpful and a good sign going forward. Brissett shot 5-for-8 on the night and 3-for-5 from deep while scoring eight points. Philadelphia now just has to figure out how those two fit into its plans for the final stretch of the season.
Nurse had this to say on the new guys starting with Brissett:
A little different than I expected. Usually, he's a rebounding machine, and he'll go out there and grab a ton of boards and one rebound, one tip in, came close on a few other offensive ones. Then he scored well, shot the ball really well. So it was a pretty good 22 minutes there, from here. He played a lot of minutes yesterday, I think, in the game, and traveled in today, and pretty good, I thought. And I thought, Jalen Hood-Schifino looked good, too. He missed some shots, but I thought he got into some spots. I thought he got only one, maybe one questionable shot. He took one 3 that wasn't quite open, but the rest of, he got some clearance and I thought he looked good handling the ball. So I look forward to watching those guys play a little more.
Hood-Schifino looking to make an impact
A former first-round pick, Hood-Schifino is going to look to make an impact in Philadelphia. He had not played in a game since Dec. 1 with the Los Angeles Lakers and he has dealt with a ton of injuries. While it wasn't a great performance for him, he is looking for the reps needed in order to take the next step in his NBA career.
"Yeah, it was a huge blessing," Hood-Schifino said of his Sixers debut. "I haven’t been on the NBA court pretty much all year. So to just be able to be blessed, be able to play out there and get out there was definitely a blessing. Obviously, we didn't come out with a win, but just to be able to compete and be out there with the guys was definitely fun."
