2025 NFL draft: Joe Schoen, New York Giants in no-lose situation

For the past decade, the New York Giants have gotten very few breaks. Granted, they haven't helped themselves much, either, but the football gods have not shined kindly upon them.

That tide appears to be turning. Last year, they couldn't swing a deal to draft a quarterback, which led to LSU stud wide receiver Malik Nabers falling squarely in their lap. A nice consolation prize.

This year, in the 2025 NFL draft, they hold the third overall pick. One would think that isn't so great. It's not No. 1, after all. But this year's draft class has more than three players worthy of that slot. That's good for Big Blue and general manager Joe Schoen.

The two teams selecting in front of him, Tennessee and Cleveland, haven't quite committed to any players (that we know of), which puts Schoen in a holding pattern, much like he was last year.

And, much like last year, he's going to land a great talent no matter what. It's like playing a game of musical chairs where there are more chairs than players.

The Giants will end up with one of four players: Miami quarterback Cam Ward, Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter, pr Colorado's Travis Hunter, the two-way star who is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner.

Joe Schoen, the general manager who a year ago was the butt of a million memes and jokes after the Giants' dysfunction was aired by HBO's Hard Knocks, is in a no-lose situation. In fact, he's in the driver's seat.

After knocking it out of the park with his draft class last season, he's got a chance to better that performance this spring.

Landing one of the quarterbacks gives Schoen an extended lease on life. It will give the Giants a vision for the future. Ward or Sanders will not have to play right away since the team has recently added veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston to their quarterback room.

Carter would bolster a pass rush that already boasts such talent as Brian Burns, Dexter Lawrence, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Chauncey Golston. Good luck to whoever has to block that.

Hunter, who many believe the Giants could target now that he dazzled at his pro day, would upgrade the roster in all three phases of the game. The Giants had not only their head coach, Brian Daboll, in Colorado on Friday, but they had all three coordinators. That speaks volumes. Hunter can star in multiple roles for them.

So, fire away, Titans and Browns. No matter who you pick, you will leave the Giants with at least two studs to choose from. Draft day is going to be fun for Giants fans once more.
