NY Post endorses Trump after previous criticisms
The New York Post is endorsing former President Trump for president, arguing that his record in the White House matters more than his tendency to be "ridiculously hyperbolic."
Writing that Trump "exhibits the same strength and vigor as he did in 2016," the Post's editorial board said Trump and Harris "want to take us down very different roads — making the choice stark and simple, but vital."
"Donald Trump is the right choice," the Rupert Murdoch-owned newspaper wrote.
The Post's endorsement comes after previous criticisms the outlet's editorial board has hurled at Trump over his managing of the coronavirus pandemic and actions in the lead-up to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol by his supporters.
The CNN media critic Brian Stelter noted in 2022, the Post said Trump had "proven himself unworthy to be this country's chief executive again."
The newspaper has changed its tune less than two weeks out from election day.
"His opponents focus on how Trump’s administration was marked by a relentless soap opera of high drama and chaos — much of which they fueled. And yes, many find him offensive — and we say fair enough: He can be ridiculously hyperbolic," the Post wrote in its endorsement.
"But before COVID wreaked havoc across the globe, Trump’s first-term results were paychecks that grew markedly faster than inflation, the lowest unemployment in 50 years, a secure border and peace overseas."
Trump has feuded with Murdoch and a number of the conservative media outlets he owns for months, most notably attacking the Post over its glowing coverage of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) during the GOP presidential primary.
But on Friday morning, Trump shared the newspaper's cover story on his Truth Social website, which featured a photo of him raising his fist for a crowd in Pennsylvania after an assassination attempt earlier this year, writing: "THANK YOU TO THE NEW YORK POST!"
