Dragon Age: The Veilguard - All Romance Options And How To Romance Companions
You'll meet seven companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. While everyone is focused on the coming apocalypse, you might want to get frisky with your allies. Here's our guide on the many romance options and how to romance companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Romance options in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Our Dragon Age: The Veilguard romance guide primarily discusses general mechanics when it comes to this particular system. This includes flirting, commitment, and until when you'd be able to put off these decisions.
We do have separate guides that have more details about character recruitment and the Hero of the Veilguard status. Of course, you can take a look at the romance guides for each companion by clicking on the links below:
The basics: Flirting stages
Generally speaking, companion romance in Dragon Age: The Veilguard works in the following manner:
- You'll be able to periodically interact with companions at the Lighthouse hub. Their portrait will either have an exclamation point icon (in a speech bubble) or a clock icon. These conversations may offer an additional reply with a heart symbol, which furthers your romantic advances.
- As you increase your bonds with a companion, you'll get to tackle their personal quests. These, too, may have conversations with romantic and flirtatious replies.
- You can flirt with as many companions as you'd like until you reach a point where you have to be committed to them or not.
Increasing your bond with companions
If you want to successfully romance companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, then you have to continue increasing your bonds with them. Keep these tips in mind:
- Any type of quest - Companions that are in your party whenever you complete a quest will gain an approval boost.
- Region/faction quests - Companions that belong to a particular faction gain an approval boost whenever you clear encounters during a quest. For example, defeating Venatori enemies in Dock Town increases your bond with Neve, but not with Harding, Taash, or others.
- Personal quest - Completing a companion's personal quest will always raise their affinity.
- Consider their personalities and what they like - Keep in mind that your companions have their own likes and dislikes. Lucanis doesn't want to be treated akin to an outsider just because he's possessed by a demon, while Harding needs support because of her newfound gifts.
- Other relationship boosts - The decisions that you make as part of quests and events also impact companion approval. For instance, your decision in the On Blighted Wings/On Deadly Wings quest affects Neve and Lucanis.
Double-check the Lighthouse to see if there are new interactions
Another tip to remember if you wish to romance Dragon Age: The Veilguard companions is that many interactions take place in the Lighthouse hub. Ideally, you can recheck the area by fast traveling to the Crossroads, and then teleporting back to the Lighthouse via the nearby eluvian portal. If you see an icon over a character portrait when you open the local map, it means that you can chat with a teammate.
Expressing romantic interest or ending the romance arc
Selecting romantic/heart replies shouldn't be a problem until a few hours into the game. That's when you'll see new options:
- Express romantic interest without committing to a romance - Choose this reply to continue your advances.
- End romance - In some cases, there are more than one of these in the dialogue wheel. This will end the romance arc prematurely.
Commitment or the friend zone
As you continue to romance companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, you'll eventually unlock a personal quest or private conversation that presents a crucial decision:
- Commit to an exclusive relationship - This locks you in completely with one companion. That's that. All other active "flirty 'coz you're dirty" activities end abruptly.
- Commit to being friends - This puts a companion in the friend zone permanently. This is useful in a particular scenario. For example, you've been getting all cozy with Bellara even though you prefer Davrin. If you accidentally end up doing Bellara's late-game personal quest and this prompt appears, then you can friend-zone her. Perhaps you'll unlock Davrin's commitment conversation soon enough.
Until when can you put off being in a committed relationship
For players who want to get all chummy with party members for most of the campaign, here's what we've discovered in our playthrough:
- Taash romance - Taash's commitment conversation occurs during her personal quest: A Little Dragon Hatches. However, you must complete it before doing a main quest called Fire and Ice. Since Fire and Ice is a mid-game main quest, you have to commit to a relationship with Taash a lot sooner, foregoing potential romance with other characters.
- Lucanis romance - Sadly, we were unable to check out the Lucanis romance in our playthrough. This was due to the consequences of our decision during the On Blighted Wings/On Deadly Wings quest.
- Neve, Bellara, Davrin, Emmrich, and Harding romance - You can put off commitment until very late in the campaign, whereupon you should decide which ones becomes your partner while the rest get friend-zoned. Here are the personal quests that you should be aware of:
- Neve: A Clear Mind
- Davrin: A Friend in Need
- Emmrich: Arrangements
- Harding: The Bond Rekindled
- Bellara: Private conversation at the Lighthouse - In our playthrough, this appeared well after The Hummingbird's Lament personal quest.
Furthermore, when you reach the "point of no return" of the campaign--you'll know it since you'll be notified in the quest panel--you're urged to have a chat with the person that you're exclusively dating.
Can companions romance each other
Since you're limited to one committed relationship in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, that means the rest of your companions end up in the friendzone. However, they can certainly get jiggy with a buddy (offscreen, of course). Here are some examples that we've seen in our playthrough where we decided to finally be in a committed relationship with Neve:
- Harding and Taash got together.
- Emmrich and Strife (the Veil Jumpers NPC) started dating.
In any case, that's everything you need to know about companion romance in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Don't forget that we have separate romance guides for Neve, Harding, Bellara, Taash, Davrin, and Emmrich.
Lastly, if you can complete a companion's quests, they'll become a Hero of the Veilguard. This is a special classification that nets them a unique passive perk and a legendary armor.
The lands of Thedas are under threat from formidable foes, including some menacing elven gods, and it's up to Rook and their allies to save the day. For more tips and tactics, you can visit our Dragon Age: The Veilguard guides hub.
