Yellowjackets report: Baseball sweeps opening UMAC series
Mar. 24—SUPERIOR — Wisconsin-Superior opened Upper Midwest Athletic Conference baseball play with three comfortable wins over Northland on Thursday and Friday, March 20-21.
Thursday, Ben Welle threw a two-hit complete-game shutout for UWS in a 5-0 win. Payton Steiner, Trey Sybrant and Tanner Voight finished with two hits apiece.
Friday, the Yellowjackets swept a pair of seven-inning games, 13-1 and 13-3.
Zach Romans threw seven innings, allowing one early unearned run on two hits and striking out eight.
Eight of the Yellowjackets' 12 hits went for extra bases, with Steiner, Maxton Howell and Brian O'Dwyer going deep. Sybrant and Voight had three-hit games.
Steiner had another homer in game two. Howell was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while four UWS players had two hits each.
The Yellowjackets (8-9, 3-0 UMAC) will travel to Saint Mary's on Tuesday, March 25 for a nonconference doubleheader before returning home for three games with Martin Luther on Friday and Saturday, March 28-29.
