Yankees’ Marcus Stroman goes to 15-day injured list with left knee inflammation

NEW YORK — Injuries continue to pile up among Yankees starting pitchers.

Marcus Stroman is headed to the 15-day injured list with left knee inflammation, the Yankees announced Saturday.

The move came a day after Stroman allowed five runs in 2/3 innings in Friday night’s 9-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants.

Following that rain-shortened loss, manager Aaron Boone revealed Stroman had said the knee was “bugging” him. Stroman had X-rays done at Yankee Stadium on Friday before he underwent additional testing at an area hospital.

Boone did not have an update on Stroman during Saturday’s pregame press conference but said the right-hander was set to meet with the team doctor. The manager acknowledged the knee issue could have played a role in Stroman’s rough outing.

“For him to come out and at least say something, it could be, on some level, a factor,” Boone said.

In a corresponding move Saturday, the Yankees called up right-hander Allan Winans from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Stroman is 0-1 with an 11.57 ERA in 9 1/3 innings through three starts this season, his second in a two-year, $37 million contract with the Yankees.

Last year, the right-hander went 10-9 with a 4.31 ERA in 30 appearances, including 29 starts, but he pitched to a 5.98 ERA after the All-Star break and was not used in a playoff game.

Stroman has an $18 million option for next season that would vest if he pitches 140 innings this year.

The Yankees began the season with three pitchers on the injured list, including ace Gerrit Cole, who underwent season-ending elbow surgery last month, and Luis Gil, who is expected to be out until at least June with a lat strain.

Clarke Schmidt is expected to make his 2025 debut within the next few days after working his way back from right rotator cuff tendonitis.

The Yankees claimed Winans, 29, off of waivers from the Atlanta Braves in January. The right-hander made his MLB debut in 2023 and is 1-4 with a 7.20 ERA over eight appearances, all starts, in his career.

Winans threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts in his lone appearance with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, which came in relief.
