Wonder Boys sweep past ECU baseball team
Arkansas Tech scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to slip past East Central 8-5 in Game 1 of a Great American Conference twinbill Saturday at Ken Turner Field.
In Game 2, the Wonder Boys got a strong pitching performance from Daniel Hutchison and rolled to a 10-1 victory.
Coach Kevin Paxson’s squad fell to 4-25 overall and 1-17 in GAC play, while Arkansas Tech left town at 14-14 and 11-6.
East Central travels to Bethany today for a midweek battle with host Southern Nazarene University. The Tigers are at Southwestern Friday and Saturday for a weekend GAC series.
Arkansas Tech 8, ECU 5
East Central was in command for most of the contest. The Tigers led 5-0 after six complete innings. However, the Wonder Boys scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning and used the five-run surge in the ninth to complete the rally.
Zac Carroll got ECU started with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the first inning and then he scored on a two-out, run-scoring single by Bennie Qualls that put the hosts on top 3-0.
Lucas Barnes delivered a two-out, two-RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to push the Tiger advantage to 5-0.
Arkansas Tech’s big ninth inning was highlighted by a three-run triple by Sawyer Duddleston.
East Central stranded runners at second and third in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Qualls had two of ECU’s six total hits and also cracked a double.
Cole Dawson paced Arkansas Tech at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Cal Birchfield turned in a solid pitching performance for the Tigers. He struck out seven, walked four and allowed just two earned runs in 6.2 innings of work.
Derek Rockett snagged the mound win in relief for the Wonder Boys. He struck out four, walked three and hit two batters in four shutout innings.
Arkansas Tech 10, ECU 1
Hutchison tossed all seven innings for the Wonder Boys. He struck out seven, walked two and allowed just one earned run.
The Tigers managed just five total hits — all singles — by five different players. Max Tremblay finished 1-for-2 and drove in the only ECU run.
Arkansas Tech compiled 17 hits, led by Simon Murray who finished 2-for-2 with two walks, a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored. Joe Kinneberg finished 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored and Tyler Sardelli went 2-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored for the visitors.
Four ECU pitchers combined for eight strikeouts, four walks and three hit batters.
ATU pulls away late Friday
The East Central University baseball team rallied from an early 6-0 hole to tie the score in their opening contest against Arkansas Tech Friday at Ken Turner Field.
But the Wonder Boys held ECU scoreless over the final five innings and pulled away late for a 17-6 victory.
East Central dropped to 4-23 overall and 1-15 in Great American Conference games, while Arkansas Tech improved to 12-14 and 9-6.
Arkansas Tech 17, ECU 6
Down 6-0, Mason Shimkus was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the third inning. Tyler Akers followed with a base hit and both runners scored on a double from Bennie Qualls. Blake Seefeldt followed with a one-out double of his own to cut the ECU deficit to 6-3. He later scored on a base hit from Max Tremblay that made it 6-4.
The Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Qualls then drove in the first run on a fielder’s choice. Zac Carroll then hit a sharp single to right field that pushed across another run but Qualls was gunned down at home trying to score on the play to end the inning with the game tied at 6-6.
The Wonder Boys scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to regain the lead and then erupted for eight runs in the top of the eighth inning to pull away.
ECU finished with seven hits, led by Akers who went 2-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored.
The Wonder Boys piled up 16 total hits. Tyler Sardelli led the way from the top of the ATU batting order. He finished 4-for-4 with two walks and four runs scored. Sawyer Duddleston finished 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs and Kolby Webb went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double and a run scored for the visitors.
Kirby Jenkins ended up 1-for-2 with a walk, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored for ATU.
Four ECU pitchers combined for seven strikeouts, eight walks and four hit batters.
Arkansas Tech also used four pitchers who combined for eight strikeouts, seven walks and three hit batters. Ashton Greenlee was the winner in relief. He struck out two, walked three and allowed one earned run in 2.2 innings.
