The NFL is allowing teams to wear alternate jerseys four times during the season. This is an increase from the previously allotted three opportunities to wear alternative jerseys, but is still rare enough to keep them as a special occasion.
It’ll be interesting to see what this means for the New Orleans Saints under Kellen Moore. The rule creates more opportunities to wear the Color Rush and throwback jerseys. If Sean Payton or Dennis Allen were still leading the team, it would likely just mean another opportunity to wear the Color Rush uniforms. In the 18 years of the Sean Payton era and the shadow that remained under Allen, New Orleans only turned the clock back five times.
Traditionally, the Saints let team captains vote each week on which uniforms they'll wear, unless it's been decided by the opponent for road games or someone higher up in the organization making the call for a nationally-televised prime-time game. But that decision may go to the coach's desk with a change in leadership.
Moore could have a greater affinity for the jerseys from the 60’s. Fans certainly like them, so this could be a bit of fan service as well. New Orleans has a good assortment of jerseys, and it would be nice to see them go retro once or twice each year.
