Speaking at the NFL's Annual League Meeting in Florida on Monday, Denver Broncos owner/CEO Greg Penner reiterated once again that all options are on the table for the team's stadium future.
“We’re continuing our diligence," Penner said. "As I mentioned before, it’s complex. We haven’t ruled anything out. We’re still looking at the current site, other sites around Denver, Lone Tree, Aurora. We don’t have a set timetable for making a decision.
"We obviously have our lease that ends at a certain date, which is a date that we could focus on. It could be something that would happen earlier than that. If we needed to, we could be in our current stadium longer. So we don’t have a set timetable at this point.”
Denver's lease at Empower Field at Mile High runs through the 2030 season, but it could be extended if needed. The Broncos have emphasized that nothing has been finalized yet, but there's been heavy speculation that the team will end up building a new super stadium.
Penner confirmed that a covered stadium is a possibility.
“That’s definitely one of the options we’re evaluating whether it’d be a dome or a retractable roof," he said. "That’s in the consideration set.”
Penner referencing a long-term plan seemingly suggests a new stadium is the top option.
“We’re really focused on what’s the best option long-term," he said. "We’re thinking, and we want to create what’s the best option for the next 40 or 50 years, not the next 10 or 20 years.”
So while nothing is official or confirmed, the Broncos seem to be trending toward eventually building a new stadium. Stay tuned.
