Broncos give update on Courtland Sutton's status with team

There's good news on the Courtland Sutton front.

After skipping the voluntary portion of the Denver Broncos' offseason program last spring, Sutton plans to attend the team's voluntary workouts this year, according to a report from KUSA-TV's Mike Klis.

Sutton skipped last year's workouts in protest of his contract, which had two years remaining at the time. Klis reports that Broncos coach Sean Payton met with Sutton and told him to seek a new deal with one year left, not two. Sutton honored his coach's request, and the team added incentives to the receiver's 2024 deal.

Sutton is now seeking an extension, but he won't skip the 2025 offseason program.

"There’s no timeline," Payton said Monday when asked if there's a timeline for a Sutton extension. "I’m excited that he’ll be there whenever we get going, and we’ll go from there. But I know there isn’t any timeline.”

Klis has reported that Sutton will seek a new contract worth "well north" of $20 million per season. He's currently set to earn $14 million in 2025.

“You’ve seen how we’ve done our business," general manager George Paton said Monday when asked about upcoming extensions. "Typically, let’s get through the draft. We’ll be open to conversations after the draft and into the summer and sometimes into the season as well.”

In addition to Sutton, other players with one season left on their contracts include defensive lineman Zach Allen, pass rusher Nik Bonitto and defensive linemen John Franklin-Myers and Malcolm Roach. Paton was asked at the NFL's Annual League Meeting if there's a sense of urgency to get an extension done for Bonitto.

“We’ll have those talks at the right time," Paton said. "Again, you’ve seen how we’ve done our business. So we have a few other players that are really good that I’m sure we’ll have those discussions with.”

Denver is expected to heat up extension talks following the 2025 NFL draft (April 24-26).
