Why Michigan football EDGE TJ Guy switched numbers from 42 to 4 in spring ball
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With the updated spring ball roster for Michigan football came a few surprises. Given that the weights and heights aren't updated, that means either players switching positions or number changes.
We saw a handful of number changes across the board, from standout defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny abdicating the long-worn No. 26 for Mason Graham's former No. 55 -- the number that Benny wore in high school -- to returning edge rusher TJ Guy leaving behind No. 42 (which he's worn since he was a freshman) for No. 4.
According to Guy, it was head coach Sherrone Moore's idea to make the switch. It took Guy a minute before he decided to take it on, but he's now glad he did.
"Coach Moore asked me if I wanted a single digit. And I was kind of reluctant at first," Guy said. "Because of what I built in the 42, it was special to me. It's still going to be special to me. But, it's a great honor when your head coach asks you if you want a single digit. So I took that with pride and I'm going to ride it out for this last year."
The way that Guy sees it, at least now, it's something of an honor for an edge rusher (or any defensive lineman) to wear a single digit rather than a high number. Both of Michigan's starting edge rushers last year -- No. 8 Derrick Moore and No. 0 Josaiah Stewart -- wore single digits. But that's not always the case.
Considering that it's his senior year, Guy is excited for the switch, especially as he steps into a starting role.
"Single digit -- it's a big thing if you can earn a single digit I feel like," Guy said. "So Coach Moore presented me with the question and asked if I wanted it and I had to think about it for a while because I kind of built something with 42. But, you know, single-digit, last ride. I said, why not? Let's do it."
