What Patriots told Josh Dobbs about Drake Maye-Joe Milton situation

The New England Patriots reportedly showed their hand when it comes to Joe Milton III before signing veteran quarterback Josh Dobbs.

Per NFL insider Albert Breer, Dobbs was informed that he was signed by the team to be a valuable resource to second-year quarterback Drake Maye. He was also made aware that Milton would likely be moved to ensure he was the top backup option.

Breer wrote:

"The motivator behind the trade is pretty understandable. New England wanted, in Mike Vrabel’s first year, to give Maye the best environment possible in the quarterback room. They actually communicated that to Josh Dobbs before signing the veteran, believing Dobbs could be a valuable resource to the second-year stud, and telling him that they’d likely move Milton before the draft to assure him he’d be the backup."

Dobbs was ultimately signed by the Patriots, and Milton was shipped off in a trade to the Dallas Cowboys.

Mass Live's Karen Guregian reported over the weekend that Milton believed he had a chance to either push or outright overtake Maye for the starting job in New England.

Avoiding that kind of dynamic between two young quarterbacks was just as important, if not more, than the draft compensation for the Patriots.

Maye is the franchise quarterback in New England, and the Patriots felt more comfortable with a veteran backup who could help with his growth.
