There has been plenty of speculation surrounding the Joe Milton trade between the New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys.
FOX Sports' Jordan Schultz reported multiple teams were interested in the second-year quarterback, while also pointing out that the Patriots left a better offer on the table in the agreed upon deal with Dallas.
NFL insider Albert Breer noted in his SI.com column that there were multiple teams interested. However, he claimed the Cowboys had the only offer on the table for the Patriots, which ended up being a fifth-round draft pick in exchange for Milton and a seventh-round pick.
Per Breer, there aren't many in the league who view Milton as a future star in the NFL. Breer wrote:
"Milton’s not a bad guy. But he wants to be a starter. He spent six years in school and is already 25 years old. Unless you think he’s going to evolve into a star, really, if that room was going to be built to accelerate Maye’s development, Milton wasn’t going to be a fit.
"And let’s be clear in saying you won’t find many people who think Milton will be a star. The return that the Patriots got for him is a good indication of that."
Milton had plenty of skeptics coming out of college, which led to him falling to the sixth round. The former Tennessee quarterback appeared in the season finale for the Patriots against mostly backups for the Buffalo Bills and went 22-of-29 passing for 241 yards and one touchdown.
There is always a chance that Milton overcomes the odds and eventually overtakes Dak Prescott as the Cowboys' starter. The Patriots were willing to move on and grant him that opportunity, while they continue to focus on building around their franchise quarterback, Drake Maye.
