What does former Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden think of the Commanders offseason moves thus far?
Gruden, who was Washington's head coach from 2014 to the 2019 season, has an informative podcast with former Washington quarterback Colt McCoy entitled "Clean Pocket." It's worth your time, and Commanders fans won't be sorry.
Here is a concise summary of Gruden's comments on some of the Commanders' 2025 offseason moves.
- K Zane Gonzalez: "Good to have on your team; opportunity to get a good college free agent to compete"
- P Tress Way: "Has been one of the best in the business for multiple years; great move to re-sign Tress"
- DT Eddie Goldman: "Good run stopper"
- DT Javon Kinlaw: "An underachiever pretty much his whole career, but does have size/athletic ability"
- DE: Deatrich Wise: "A hard-nosed, tough, physical player...will try to stop the run. Where is the pass rush going to come from? That is my biggest concern about the defensive line."
- LB Bobby Wagner: "He's a leader. He's great for your culture."
- CB Jonathan Jones: "He can move around, play different spots. I love his versatility."
- S Will Harris: "Another guy with great versatility to fit into Dan Quinn's scheme."
- QB Marcus Mariota: "You have to have a good backup; it's great they re-signed Mariota."
- WR Deebo Samuel: "Can do a lot of different things in the slot, outside, in the backfield."
- WR Noah Brown: "Re-signed Brown after his injury last year; that is a good sign."
- WR Michael Gallup: "Has tapered off a little bit with some injuries."
- TE Zach Ertz: "Love the fact they re-signed him; he was Jayden Daniels' security blanket."
- TE John Bates: "A tight end that can block at the point of attack."
- RB Jeremy McNichols & RB Chris Rodriguez: "I still believe the Commanders will select a running back on the final day of this NFL draft."
- LT Laremy Tunsil: "If he reigns in his penalties, he can be one of the better tackles in the NFL."
- G Nate Herbig: "Good to sign him because he can play center and both guard positions."
"I think they did an excellent job; they kept the core of their team intact and added some key pieces. The biggest issue is we have to get after the quarterback. Somewhere, somehow, somebody has got to come into this building and really rush the passer..." Gruden said.
Gruden's concerns about Washington's pass rush are legitimate. However, the coach continues to love everything GM Adam Peters is doing to build around Jayden Daniels.
