49ers NFL free agency moves receive embarrassing grade from PFF
The 49ers didn't enter this offseason as one of the NFL teams with the most money to spend.
Instead, San Francisco has largely been content to either deal away, release or watch talented vets walk as the franchise looks to get younger. The 49ers also have a big contract extension looming this offseason for quarterback Brock Purdy and star tight end George Kittle is entering the final year of his current contract.
Still, the 49ers have made a few free agency additions. Pro Football Focus assigned a letter grade to every NFL team's free agency additions thus far.
The 49ers received a below average grade of D for their two free agency additions in quarterback Mac Jones and wide receiver Demarcus Robinson.
Jones and Robinson each earned overall grades of 65.0 during the 2024 season at Jacksonville and Los Angeles, respectively. Jones played in 10 games and started seven for the Jaguars in 2024, completing 65.3% of his passes for 1,672 yards and eight touchdowns with eight picks. Robinson reeled in 31 passes for 505 yards with seven touchdown grabs.
Here's what PFF wrote about the addition of Jones for San Francisco.
Jones was forced into action in Week 10 of the 2024 season due to Jaguars franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s injury, and he struggled to find consistency. He completed 64.8% of his passes and had eight big-time throws across his appearances, but he also racked up eight interceptions and 10 turnover-worthy plays. Barring injury, he’ll likely serve as Brock Purdy‘s primary backup in San Francisco. - Pro Football Focus.
Robinson is a ninth-year pro and joins the 49ers with 147 career games played and 68 starts under his belt. The 6-foot-1 wide receiver has caught 250 passes for more than 3,000 yards in his career with 27 touchdown receptions.
Robinson has earned a PFF grade of 65.0 or better in each of the past three seasons and is a solid fit for the 49ers offense. With San Francisco’s loaded skill group — including its top receivers, tight end George Kittle, and running back Christian McCaffrey — he will likely be the sixth option in the passing attack. However, he has been a reliable target, dropping just two of 66 catchable passes over the past two seasons. - Pro Football Focus.
According to PFF, both Jones and Robinson's deals were regarded as average. Jones received a two-year, $7 million deal with $5 million guaranteed while Robinson inked a two-year, $9.5 million deal with $6 million guaranteed.
Though the 49ers don't get top marks from PFF for these two signings, San Francisco found its reliable backup quarterback and a veteran receiver for a cheap asking price.
