For the first time in program history, Western Michigan is a national champion. The Broncos defeated Boston University, 6-2, at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis.
Senior forward Wyatt Schingoethe opened the scoring for Western Michigan in the first period, then freshman forward Cole Eiserman got the Terriers on the board.
But it was the Broncos who were in front after 20 minutes, after sophomore defenseman Cole Crusberg-Roseen scored for Western Michigan.
Freshman forward Ty Henricks made it 3-1 Broncos in the second period, but sophomore forward Shane Lachance pulled the Terriers within one. Western Michigan took a one-goal lead into the third period.
After a back-and-forth start to the final frame, three unanswered goals by the Broncos sealed the deal. Sophomore forward Owen Michaels scored twice, and freshman forward Iiro Hakkarainen once.
Freshman Hampton Slukynsky made 24 saves in the win for Western Michigan, and Michaels was named the Frozen Four's most outstanding player.
