Vote now for the Daily Leader Athlete of the Week from March 17-22
Many players have gotten off to fast starts as the baseball and softball campaigns have begun. From pitching to hitting, these players have provided a successful list of candidates for the Daily Leader Athlete of the Week nominations for March 17-22.
Each week, the Daily Leader nominates a group of stars, and you get to go and vote in our poll. This week you will choose the winner for March 17-22. The voting at pontiacdailyleader.com ends at noon on Friday.
Coaches may email Erich Murphy at emurphy@gannett.com by 9 a.m. each Monday to submit a potential nominee who can be placed on the ballot.
Kyah Creek, Prairie Central
Creek had a solid week at the plate in helping Prairie Central open its season with a 2-2 mark. She collected four extra-base hits (three doubles, triple) in her five safeties for the week. She scored seven times.
Luke Gallet, Dwight
Gallet pitched three perfect innings for Dwight in a win over Momence. He set down seven on strikes in the five-inning game. He also had a hit and two runs batted in in the twin-bill. He homered and fanned five in a loss to Coal City.
Evan Hansen, Prairie Central
Hansen had four hits, including a homer and double, drove in three runs and scored twice as Prairie Central opened its baseball season with a 1-3 week.
Dixie Hogan, Prairie Central
Hogan got the win in the opener with a two-hitter. She struck out three in the win over Woodland-Flanagan-Cornell. She also fanned three in one inning of relief and struck out two in taking a loss.
Elena Krause, Pontiac
Krause collected three hits and scored two runs in Pontiac’s only softball game of the week. In the circle, she pitched top-ranked PTHS to a 3-1 victory over second-ranked Metamora by striking out 11.
Cayden Masching, Pontiac
Masching belted a 3-run homer that tied Pontiac’s season-opening baseball game with Metamora. PTHS added three runs in the sixth for the win. Masching scored twice.
Tony Schahrer, Prairie Central
Schahrer collected six base hits, including two doubles, scored twice and drove in two runs for the Hawks in the opening week of the baseball season.
Mckenna Woodcock, Dwight
Woodcock recorded three hits, including a pair of doubles, in her first week of high school softball. The freshman catcher also drew three walks and scored three times in the first two games. On defense, she threw three baserunners out trying to steal.
