Town officials salute the G-Men for their valiant efforts in the Class 2 Boys Basketball Championship
RICHMOND, Va. — Town officials in Bluefield, Va., are saluting the Graham G-Men for their valiant efforts in the Class 2 Boys Basketball Championship.
Graham faced John Marshall in the championship contest Thursday night in Richmond, Va., at the Virginia Commonwealth Siegel Center. The G-Men fell 107 to 81, according to the Virginia High School League with Graham finishing the season as the Virginia High School League Class 2 runner up.
Graham High School is extremely proud of the team’s efforts, according to GHS Assistant Principal Patrick Buckner.
Absolutely we are,” Buckner said.
“I’m not for sure about that stat, but we scored 81 points against them, which I want to say is the second highest total any team in any public school has scored against John Marshall.”
Buckner said the G-Men came to play and didn’t back down.
”They played their hearts out, and had a great game,” Buckner said. “The thing we are most proud of at Graham is they are great kids on and off of the court. They are amazing young men and they had a great season. Making it that far in basketball is not easy. We played a tremendous John Marshall team.”
Buckner said it felt like a game of “David versus Goliath” with the G-Men outscoring John Marshall in the third quarter.
The town of Bluefield, Va., also is proud of the accomplishments of the G-Men, according to Mayor Donnie Linkous.
”We are so proud of them it is unbelievable,” Linkous said. “They did a fantastic job representing the area.”
Linkous said John Marshall came into the championship contest ranked no. 12 in the nation.
”This is the David versus Goliath story,” Linkous said. “We were supposed to get beat by 50 or 60 points. But our players did amazing. As a matter of fact, we scored as many plays in the second half as they did. Our guys, coaching staff and players did a fabulous job.”
Linkous said the 81 points scored by the G-Men was the most scored by a Double A school against John Marshall.
”They (John Marshall) are rated number 12,” Linkous said.
“They average 110 points a game. So that just makes me so much more proud of Graham High School for scoring 80 some points.”
