Todd Bowles shares his approach to roster building and it isn't what you think

Todd Bowles spoke to the media this week while being in Palm Beach for the NFL's annual meetings. He made several interesting comments but one stood out above the rest as it relates to team building and what he has learned over the years as a defensive coach.

Todd Bowles spoke on Tuesday, and Scott Smith of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers shared a quote that the veteran coach gave to everyone in attendance.

"Being a defensive coach, I learned that you win by scoring points. ... I would like to have some defensive players if that presented itself, but by no means would I bypass a very good offensive player just to satisfy my needs on defense."

We always hear that defense wins championships, and to hear a defensive-minded coach say the opposite is interesting, to say the least. For the Bucs at 19, the odds are more in their favor to have a better value on defense than on offense. But there is a wildcard in Tetairoa McMillan who could fall to 19, which would be an interesting choice for the Bucs, considering how rich they are at wide receiver.

Bowles is likely to see this philosophy tested in 22 days.
