'They don't quit': North Brunswick baseball upsets top team in North Carolina

The North Brunswick High School baseball team never doubts itself.

Even with a losing record. Even as they went on the road to play a team they hadn't beaten in six years. Even as they faced an Ashley side that was a perfect 13-0 entering Tuesday's matchup in Wilmington, the Scorpions were 100% confident.

"All the cards were against us tonight," North Brunswick baseball coach Terrence Jackson said after his team upset Ashley 5-0 Tuesday. "It means a lot to the boys, to the fans, and of course North Brunswick High School as a whole."

The Scorpions (6-7, 3-4 Mideastern) defied all odds as they shut out Ashley (13-1, 6-1 MEC) on the road, handing the Screaming Eagles, which Maxpreps ranked the No. 1 team in the state entering the contest, their first loss of 2025.

"We go into every game thinking that we can win because, honestly, we can," junior pitcher Tyler Kelly said. "We have a good enough squad, and we just trusted each other knowing that we can win."

North Brunswick started fast as Jonah Campbell opened scoring in the top of the first inning with a solo home run. Aydean White brought in two more runs moments later on a single.

"This is just the start of what we can do, so hopefully, we can take this energy, and we can roll with it," Jackson said. "The boys don't give up. Even though we've been struggling … they don't quit."

Kelly earned the win, striking out one batter but allowing just one hit in 6 2/3 innings on the mound. The win is North Brunswick's third over Ashley since 2013 and first since 2019. They sit fifth in the Mideastern Conference.

The Scorpions were ranked the No. 148th team in the state before the win, a mark they know doesn't truly represent their ability.

"We're better than what our record shows, Kelly said. "You can't judge a book by its cover. If y'all want to know how good North Brunswick is, then y'all can come down and watch us play."
