Outlook: Pitching and defense wins championships, the saying goes, and the Bears hope that’s again the backbone of the squad. However, hits help, too, and East Brunswick looks to improve on last year’s .206 average of a team that got shutout six times. One positive is about half a dozen players are back who saw a chunk of varsity and the junior varsity boasted a .300 team average. The Bears have speed and the ability for timely hitting along with a deep pitching staff. EB has experienced pitchers led by senior co-aces Joshua Kesser and Hayden Dziubeck (30 IP, 3.97 ERA) with classmate Connor Glynn (11 2/3 IP, 2.40 ERA) and sophomore Jordan Rudolph just behind them. The rotation will benefit from the depth provided by Andrew Melcer, Joshua Hines, Julian Satterthwaite and Sean Christie.
Defensively, East Brunswick faces the task of replacing several starters, but returning players Joseph Spinello (CF, clean up hitter), JaredMacWithey (LF), Connor Glynn (3B), Felix Munozan (C) and first basemen Jordan Rudolph, Andrew Melcer and Jesse Beckman provide a solid foundation. Newcomer Tyler Zeichner (OF) is slated to hit leadoff and Jaidon Coello and Ryan Blum fill out the outfield. Manning the infield are newcomers Ryan Kenul (2B/SS), Jullian Satterthwait (SS), Josh Hines (2B) and Sean Gillis (2B). Brandon Bastek and Brett Ryer are also behind the plate. Chris Kenney has a 173-129-2 record entering his 13th season as head coach.
