The winners! All hail the Palm Bay Pirates, girls hoops champs | Photo of the Week
Pure, unbridled and well-deserved joy practically leaps off the page in this winning Photo of the Week.
It was captured by FLORIDA TODAY's Craig Bailey after the Palm Bay High School girls basketball team topped American Heritage in the recent Class 4A state title game.
You can practically feel the excitement in the room as Palm Bay senior standout Jaida Civil places the team's name in the champions' spot of the bracket poster after their victory.
This is the Pirates' first-ever state basketball championship, girls or boys teams, Bailey said, making it all the more special.
"The win was HUGE for the Pirates," said Bailey, who's trained his lens on winners and losers alike at many a sports event.
"They've been dominating other teams in the regular season for years, only to be defeated by the really large programs mostly down in South Florida, like American Heritage and Lake Highland Prep."
