Houston is securing its secondary.
The Texans and defensive back Jalen Pitre have agreed to terms on a three-year deal worth $39 million with $30 million guaranteed, a person close to the situation told USA TODAY Sports. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal isn’t official yet.
Pitre is a key member of a Texans defense that was the fifth best unit in the NFL last season. He tallied 65 tackles, six tackles for loss, eight pass deflections and one interception in 2024. However, his season was limited to 12 regular season games because of a shoulder injury.
He’s registered 296 tackles, 21 pass deflections and six interceptions in three seasons all in Houston.
The Texans drafted Pitre in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft out of Baylor.
Pitre has the versatility to play box safety or as a slot corner. He’s allowed under a 70% completion percentage when targeted all three seasons with the Texans.
The Texans have given contract extensions to three of their top defenders this offseason.
Houston signed defensive end Danielle Hunter to a one-year extension and made star cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history.
