GRAND LEDGE, Mich. (WLNS) – The Grand Ledge softball team is out to a 4-0 start and has outscored its opponents 49-7 so far this spring.
It’s why the Comets are our 6 Sports Team of the Week.
Grand Ledge had just two seniors on last year’s team and still found success, winning the Softball Classic for the first time since 2005 and reaching the district championship game.
“It definitely gives a lot of confidence,” said senior first baseman Zoe Hart of last year’s success. “Not much arrogance but confidence, like we know where we can build off from. We know how last season went but we know we can do better than that.”
“It definitely gives at least me a lot of confidence because I know what all these girls can do and I know the potential that we have and how we can work together,” added senior shortstop Gianna Naccarato. “I think it also helps us because we’ve been together for a year or two years now. So we kind of know each other well and we have that bond. We have that connection to trust each other on the field.”
The Comets opened this season with a doubleheader sweep of Mason, winning 14-4 and 10-3. They followed it up with another sweep of Fowlerville, winning 10-0 and 15-0.
“I think we definitely know what our potential is and that definitely helps show our potential and we know the sky is the limit,” said junior pitcher Tomia Geter.
“I don’t think I’ve ever played with a team that has so much energy and so much want to win,” said junior center fielder Jade Queen. “We all have each other’s backs like I’ve said eight times I think. But like, we all want to be here. We’re all interested in the game. We’re all focused and we’re ready to win.”
Geter, Queen, Naccarato and Hart are the team’s four captains this season. They all credit the team’s spring break trip to Clearwater, Fla. for helping them be ready to hit the ground running when the season began.
“I think it really helps us shake the rust off and just kind of be ready to play because not being able to be outside all winter in Michigan, it’s not fun,” said Naccarato. “To be able to go down there, be outside on a nice field and get our reps in and our work in before our normal season is really nice.”
“I think team bonding, honestly,” said Hart when asked what the most beneficial part of the trip was. “We get to be around each other all the time the whole week and it’s just very rewarding to feel like we know we succeeded from that.”
Grand Ledge returns to action Friday at home against Williamston.
