Hundreds of high school basketball fans packed up Lafayette Christian Academy, eager to watch the 2024 337 All-Stars Senior Basketball Games.
This annual event marks the last high school basketball game for a handful of hoopers who hail from the 337 area as they get one last chance to leave it all out on the court. For the fourth annual All-Star game, St. Landry and Lafayette Parishes girls went toe to toe to kick the evening off.
After that, the Iberia/Vermilion Parishes boys faced the St. Martin/Acadiana Parish boys. The nightcap game pitted St. Landry and Lafayette Parish boys against each other. Since the start of the All-Star game, Lafayette boys and girls have come away with victories, and that partially remained the same this year.
Here are the final scores from each All-Star game as well as the Most Valuable Player of each game, following all the action.
St. Landry girls vs. Lafayette girls
Final score: Lafayette 66, St. Landry 46
MVP: Kira Johnson, Lafayette
Summary: With only seven players active to play for Lafayette Parish, it was a slow star. It didn’t take long for it to find its rhythm, though with senior guard Johnson facilitating the ball. She ended the game with a game-high 23 points, nine of those points from deep. She also snagged five steals and grabbed six rebounds, helping the Lafayette girls win for the fourth year in a row.
Johnson: “It’s surreal, I remember yesterday, you know, I was a freshman, and I still think back to that. My first summer league game was here in this gym at LCA so it's just crazy that the last game is in here. It’s an honor to be MVP, it’s something not too many people get to do.”
Iberia/Vermilion boys vs. St. Martin/Acadiana boys
Final score: Iberia/Vermilion 60, St. Martin/Acadiana 56
MVP: Jaiden Mitchell, Catholic-New Iberia
Summary: The closest game of the night was this one as these two squads went back and forth for pretty much the entire game. The difference maker for Iberia/Vermilion boys was senior guard Mitchell. The dual-sport athlete led his team’s offense with 21 points, two steals and four rebounds. While he went off, his biggest cheerleader in the stands was his grandma who you could hear throughout the game.
Mitchell: “It feels great to win this game and be named MVP because I've been working, putting in all the work and it paid off. I thank my teammates because, without them, I wouldn’t be MVP.”
