Game of the Day
Springfield High 5, Chatham Glenwood 2
The Senators put last year’s regional final in the rearview mirror.
SHS gave up a two-goal lead but unlike last season’s postseason matchup, it closed out the second half with three unanswered goals to open the Central State Eight Conference slate with a win.
Junior forward Kalyn Burton delivered the go-ahead goal with 32 minutes left before junior standout Kamryn Hoffman capitalized on the penalty kick with under 20 minutes remaining. Addi Maddox added another goal in the final minute.
SHS coach Pat Phillips said it easily could’ve gone the other way, but the team regrouped.
“Glenwood is the class of the Central State Eight and we came out to try to compete,” Phillips said. “That’s the thing when you’re the top team like Glenwood, they get everybody’s best. Tonight, it was close to our best. We’re just glad to be back to that competitive level.”
Hoffman scored the opening goal on a long assist from Madison Clark before SHS (3-1, 1-0 CS8) extended the lead 2-0 on Zoe Wall’s lone goal. Junior goalkeeper Lydia Auble also made key saves in the win.
Glenwood (1-2, 1-1) evened the score with back-to-back goals from Addison Matthews and Rowann Law.
— Bill Welt
Briannah Walker, Riverton: The goalkeeper had three saves in a 1-0 loss to Decatur St. Teresa.
