South Carolina women's basketball vs Indiana prediction, pick for 2025 NCAA Tournament second round
COLUMBIA — South Carolina women's basketball made it through the first round of the NCAA tournament.
The No. 1 seed Gamecocks (31-3) defeated No. 16 seed Tennessee Tech on Friday 108-48 and now the defending national champions face No. 9 Indiana on Sunday in Colonial Life Arena. The Hoosiers (20-12) beat No. 8 Utah 76-68.
It marks the second-straight year these two teams have met in the NCAA tournament. Here's what you need to know before coach Dawn Staley's squad plays for a spot in the Sweet 16 on Sunday:
South Carolina women's basketball vs Indiana: March Madness history
In the Sweet 16 last season, South Carolina led by 17 at halftime and 22 midway through the third but the Hoosiers cut the deficit to two points in the last minute of the game. Raven Johnson hit a 3-pointer and a free throw to ice it but after a double-digit lead, the Gamecocks only won 79-75.
What Dawn Staley said about South Carolina vs Indiana in March Madness
After defeating Tennessee Tech, Staley was asked about last season ahead of the rematch.
"We got a taste of that in the last NCAA Tournament, and we have that in mind," Staley said. "At the top of our minds."
South Carolina hit a season high 12 3-pointers on Friday and though Staley knows defense needs to be better this time against Indiana, offense matters too.
"I've always said good basketball is contagious, bad basketball is contagious," Staley said. "I hope we bring our ability to shoot the ball as well as we shot the ball. We shot the ball pretty good, and hopefully we can take that into the next game."
Indiana's Sydney Parrish and South Carolina's Te-Hina Paopao reunite
South Carolina starting guard Te-Hina Paopao and Indiana counterpart Sydney Parrish used to be teammates at Oregon before both transferred. Parrish played two seasons for the Ducks and Paopao was in Eugene for three years.
Parrish is averaging a team-high 5.4 rebounds and 11.9 points (second on the team) per game.
The 6-foot-2 senior had only eight points against Utah but scored 21 in the loss to South Carolina last March.
South Carolina, Indiana's stats in NCAA tournament opener
Indiana shot 58% from the field against Tennessee Tech and was led by Yardeen Garzon's 17 points. The Hoosiers shot just 5-for-17 from the 3-point line and finished with 12 turnovers.
South Carolina finished 67% from the field and was led by Edwards' 22 points. The Gamecocks hit 12-of-18 3-pointers and had 16 turnovers.
South Carolina prediction vs Indiana: March Madness second round
South Carolina 75, Indiana 62: The Gamecocks are very aware of not taking Indiana for granted. Look for a lockdown defensively for four quarters that will cause the Hoosiers to struggle and keep up with South Carolina in transition.
