Six records fall: See which ones toppled at boys NIC-10 indoor track and field meet
The NIC-10 indoor track and field meet this past Saturday was a little peek into what's to come as things move outside ― a move that is kicking in for many around the area this week and next.
It was a whole lot of Hononegah, with plenty of stars from all over the place showing that they are ready to use this season to showcase their skills. And while plenty of girls stepped up with strong showings, there were six NIC-10 indoor track and field meet records that fell on the boys' side.
Come and vote: Time to vote: Who do you think deserves the Athlete of the Week honor for March 17-22?
"I think the indoor thing is going pretty good so far," said Hononegah sophomore runner Chase Cutler, who set a meet record in the 400-meter run. "And we're all showing we're ready to really get after it."
Cutler also won the 200 dash in 22.78 Saturday, just 7/100ths off Auburn sprinter Messiah Tilson's record from last year. Tilson would get his Saturday, and Cutler's 400 time of 50.13 was a meet record, and put him in the top 10 for the state indoor season.
Junior Coen Lee won the 200-meter hurdles in 25.89 to re-set the NIC-10 indoor track and field meet record that he nabbed last year, and he took second place in the 60-meter hurdles, and ran a leg of the runner-up 4x200-relay team. Lee, Benson and Hononegah rolled to the boys title with 160 points, more than double that of second-place Belvidere North which finished with 79. Harlem came in third.
On the girls side, Hononegah's win in the meet-ending 4X400 relay earned it a 79-78 victory over Harlem, with Auburn coming in third followed by Freeport. Jordan Dimke and Kylie Simpson were key cogs to that relay victory, and they both won other events as well.
Simpson won the 800 run in 2:18.54, and Dimke took first in the high jump. Dimke took second at state in that event last year, finishing only behind Guilford's Zariah Burnett. Burnett is still nursing a leg injury and did not compete during the indoor season.
And while Guilford thrower Natassja Bowman, who placed 28th at state last year, dominated the girls' NIC-10 indoor shot put event, another Hononegah athlete stepped up in the shot circle on the boys' side.
"Today I just let it go," said Hononegah senior thrower Jacob Benson, who won the shot put with a personal best of 55-feet, 6-inches. "And when the team is so good, this is what you have to do to keep up."
The sprints are going to be one of the more exciting areas to watch in the NIC-10, and around the Rockford area, this track and field season. It showed all weekend, as more records fell.
Auburn's Tilson clocked a conference-meet-record-setting 6.87 in the 60 dash, and he also anchored Guilford's 800 relay team, joined by Alexander Perry, Gideon Wooden and Daviyon Wells, to a NIC-10 indoor track and field meet record time of 1:32.07.
Belvidere North's Jesse Kramer, another one expected in Bloomington this weekend at the indoor state meet on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan, set a NIC-10 indoor track and field meet record Saturday with a 4:19.44 to win the 1,600 run. He also helped North's 1,600-relay team set a meet record with a 3:32.44, and Kramer also anchored the winning 3,200 relay team.
But it appears there may be a new team to target in the NIC-10 this season. Belvidere North came into this year winners of the last four NIC-10 outdoor track and field titles.
Hononegah made a statement this past weekend, however.
"This was a pretty good showing," Dimke said after clearing an indoor personal-best 5-6 to win the high jump in her first indoor meet of the year. "I think I did pretty well. I think we all (from Hononegah) are doing pretty well."
On the girls' side, Freeport's Ta'Leiah and Tania McElroy went 1-2 in the girls' 60-dash, and Ta'Leiah also won the 200, giving the rest of the league something to shoot for this outdoor season. They will both join several of the area's elite this coming weekend at the indoor state meet as well.
The Illinopis Top Times Indoor Championships are Friday and Saturday in Bloomington. Then, in less than two months, the NIC-10 outdoor conference meet kicks off the outdoor postseason on May 15.
