Even after re-signing Jarrett Stidham during NFL free agency, the Denver Broncos still wanted to re-sign Zach Wilson, but that was a tall task.
Wilson was inactive for all 17 games last season as the team's emergency third-string quarterback behind starter Bo Nix and Stidham, the primary backup. Wilson opted to leave in free agency last month to join the Miami Dolphins, where he will now get an opportunity to serve as the No. 2 quarterback behind Tua Tagovailoa.
“Obviously, we’re excited that ‘Stiddy’ is back," coach Sean Payton said at the NFL's Annual League Meeting in Florida on Monday. "He brings a veteran presence, but also a young presence about him. I know how he feels about his own abilities.
"We had a great room a year ago. You guys know that. It was probably unrealistic to think that we were going to have both Zach and Jarrett back. So I want to see those guys obviously have success. They’re both talented players, and I think that process… I think the experience from Jarrett is helpful to Bo.”
Nix and Stidham are back as the top QBs and Denver brought in Sam Ehlinger to serve as the new third-string QB. Wilson, meanwhile, will be closer to possible playing time in Miami. The reshuffling probably worked out well for everyone in the end.
