Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson found new NFL homes this offseason.
Winson, who played under Sean Payton with the Denver Broncos in 2023, signed with the New York Giants. Winston, who overlapped with Payton with the New Orleans Saints from 2020-2021, also joined the Giants.
While speaking at the NFL's Annual League Meeting on Monday, Payton was asked about his two former quarterbacks who landed in New York.
“Both of those guys, honestly [I] had good experiences obviously in working with them," Payton said. "They’re different types of players and personalities. That’ll be interesting. Obviously, Jameis is someone who is infectious. A lot of times you hear him before you see him. That’s not a bad thing. And Russ is someone who’s internally driven, someone who you see the work ethic. I think it will be a good room.”
Winston went 5-2 as a fill-in starter with the Saints in 2021. Wilson went 7-8 with the Broncos in 2023 before being benched by Payton and later released.
“I think they’re passionate about playing," Payton said when asked about common traits between the QBs. "I think they’re very passionate workers about playing. I would say they’re football-driven, and I think that’s important.”
Meanwhile, in Denver, Payton is moving forward with Bo Nix as his QB1. Nix earned an invite to the Pro Bowl as an alternate last season after totaling 4,207 all-purpose yards and scoring 34 touchdowns in his rookie season.
