Scotland sit joint second in the World Men's Curling Championship round-robin despite suffering a sobering 10-4 defeat by reigning champions Sweden.
Bruce Mouat's world number one ranked rink responded with an 8-6 win over Korey Dropkin's 11th-ranked United States in Moose Jaw, Canada.
With Brad Jacobs' third-ranked hosts now qualified for the next stage with nine victories and just one defeat to the Scots, Mouat's rink are level on seven wins along with two of the three sides who have defeated them so far - Yannick Schwaller's Swiss and Niklas Edin's Swedes.
Each have two games left to seal the two automatic spots in the semi-finals, or a place in the play-offs by finishing in the top six.
The Scots next face Marc Muskatewitz's eighth-ranked Germany, who are almost certainly out of the running after suffering six defeats but who beat Mouat's men in this season's European Championship final.
Their re-match will be shown live on the BBC Sport website and iPlayer at 16:00 BST on Friday before the Scots round off their round-robin campaign against Xiaoming Xu's 23rd-ranked China, who are also in the race for a play-off spot with six wins so far.
Scoring three at the eighth end, where they were 5-4 behind, proved crucial for Mouat's rink in their win over the USA.
The Scottish skip had earlier been out of sorts against seven-time champion Edin, whose rink took control with a four at the third end and capitalised on more errors to comfortably extend their advantage and end the contest after just six ends.
Olympic qualifying points gained from last year's championships will be added to this year's final total, with the top seven sides gaining qualification for Milan-Cortina in 2026, along with hosts Italy.
Those who fail to secure their place will have another chance to do so via a qualifying tournament at the end of the year.
