Sacred Heart basketball goes distance, wins 5th consecutive state title after topping GRC
LEXINGTON — As she’s done her entire career, ZaKiyah Johnson put her team on her back and delivered another state championship.
Johnson scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the second half as Sacred Heart Academy beat George Rogers Clark 65-60 in Saturday’s championship game of the Clark’s Pump-N-Shop Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena.
No. 1-ranked Sacred Heart (35-3) won an unprecedented fifth straight state championship and ninth overall.
Johnson, an LSU signee and McDonald’s All-American, was named Sweet 16 MVP for the fourth time in her career.
Tootie Jordan pitched in 19 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Valkyries.
Jailenn Green’s two free throws gave No. 2 GRC (28-8) a 60-57 lead with 52.1 seconds left, but the Valkyries scored the final eight points — all from the free-throw line — to pull it out.
Jordan’s two free throws gave Sacred Heart a 61-60 lead with 36.9 seconds left.
GRC committed four turnovers in the final 71 seconds.
Green led GRC with 19 points.
