Rost flirts with perfection as Phoenix sweep doubleheader
COLUMBIA, Ky. — Cumberland rallied after a tough loss Thursday to take both games of a Friday doubleheader to win the Mid-South Conference series over Lindsey Wilson.
The Phoenix erupted for three home runs and a 12-3 win in game one before Carter Rost flirted with perfection in game two, carrying a perfect game into the eighth inning in a 5-1 victory.
Cumberland baseball flexed its offensive firepower with three home runs and a dominant pitching performance in a 12-3 victory Dylan LaRue had a great game going 3-for-4 with five RBIs bopping a homer and two doubles, while Welchel scored three runs and drove in one. Trenton Duchscherer and Wilser Then each had home runs, as the Phoenix racked up 11 hits in the game.
The Phoenix jumped ahead early as Wilser Then launched a three-run homer to left in the first inning to get things started.
Cumberland extended the lead in the second, as Rafael Garcia led off the inning with a double and Trenton Duchscherer followed with a two-run shot. Cumberland added a run on a Lindsey Wilson error and LaRue capped off the inning with a two-RBI double, making it an 8-0 game.
Lindsey Wilson got on the board in the fourth with a bases-loaded walk, but Cumberland responded in the fifth when LaRue crushed a two-run homer to left. The Phoenix tacked on two more in the sixth, with Welchel driving in one on a single before LaRue added another RBI double to push the lead to 12-2.
The Blue Raiders added a run in the seventh to give us the 12-3 final score.
On the mound, Justin Goldstein (5-1) was stellar, striking out nine over 6.1 innings while allowing just two earned runs on eight hits. Tanner Batts came in for the final two outs to seal the win.
Rost was nearly untouchable on the mound, taking a perfect game into the eighth inning of game two as Cumberland defeated Lindsey Wilson 5-1.
Rost (3-0) dominated from the outset, retiring the first 22 batters he faced before surrendering a hit with one out in the eighth. He finished with 10 strikeouts over 8.2 innings, allowing just three hits and one run on 102 pitches. Jake Green recorded the final out to seal the win.
His performance earned the Osakis, Minn., native the Mid-South Conference Pitcher of the Week award Monday.
Offensively, Cumberland took a 1-0 lead in the third. Aiden McDonald and Drew Dalton-Akiwumi hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. Hunter Moser drove in McDonald on a fielder’s choice.
Dalton-Akiwumi extended the lead in the fifth with a solo home run to left, his second of the season. Later in the inning, Toshiki Kuriya added an RBI groundout before Rafael Garcia doubled down the left-field line to make it 4-0.
Kuriya provided an insurance run in the ninth with a solo homer to center, pushing the lead to 5-0.
Lindsey Wilson broke up the shutout with an RBI single with one out left to end Rost’s outing for the 5-1 finals score.
The Phoenix were back at home yesterday as they hosted Johnson. They will host Bethel in a three-game MSC series this weekend with a single game at 2 p.m. Friday and a doubleheader at noon Saturday at Woody Hunt Stadium/Ernest L. Stockton Field.
