Real Madrid turn down opportunity to sign 29-year-old Manchester City defender
Real Madrid have an important decision to make regarding their defence as they look to strengthen their squad for the future.
While Trent Alexander-Arnold is the primary target for a defensive addition, the situation in central defence remains a concern.
Eder Militao’s ongoing injury issues have raised doubts about his long-term reliability. David Alaba is now in his 30s, which means his physical level could gradually decline.
Antonio Rudiger has been exceptional, but there is a possibility that he might leave in a year or two.
This leaves Raul Asencio as the only long-term option for the club in central defence. Given these factors, the need for defensive reinforcements is becoming increasingly evident.
Akanji’s situation and Real Madrid’s stance
Amid these defensive uncertainties, the name of Manuel Akanji, who is under contract with Manchester City until 2027, has emerged as a potential option.
However, he has been sidelined due to an injury sustained in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 clash against Real Madrid.
Despite his injury, reports indicate that Akanji is looking for a fresh challenge and a new environment, a trend that has been growing among players under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.
With many changes expected at the club, Akanji is among those considering an exit.
Real Madrid’s possibility ruled out
Despite the availability of Akanji, reports from MARCA indicate that Real Madrid have decided against pursuing his signing.
This is because The club’s recruitment strategy focuses on bringing in young talents who can establish themselves for at least a decade.
Alternatively, they also look for players whose contracts are nearing expiration, similar to their approach with Alexander-Arnold.
Akanji, at 29 years old and with a long contract at City, does not fit into either of these categories. As a result, Real Madrid have opted not to move forward with his signing, sticking firmly to their well-defined transfer policy.
