Purpose of official 30 pre-draft prospect visits for Colts and rest of NFL

It's that time of the year, with the NFL draft rapidly approaching, that we see report after report of official or "top" 30 pre-draft visits for the Indianapolis Colts and the rest of the NFL.

But what purpose do these visits serve?

Each draft cycle, every team can host up to 30 prospects at the team facility. Through the pre-draft process and as the draft unfolds, information is King and helps teams paint a picture of who a prospect currently is both on and off the football field, along with who they can become at the NFL level with further development. Those elements obviously play a vital role in shaping each team's big board and approach to the NFL draft.

So with the accuracy of that information and the quantity of information that a team has on each prospect being crucial, oftentimes, these pre-draft visits are held with players who teams still have unanswered questions about.

These questions could be medical if there were previous injuries, it could be off-the-field questions, on-the-field questions, or perhaps, it's a lesser-known prospect the team wants to get to know more. So with that, we will see teams bring in a variety of prospects from early round picks to potential UDFAs. and everywhere in between.

Recently, ESPN's Field Yates shared a reminder when it comes to these pre-draft visits, specifically, what teams hope to accomplish by having them, which could include some gamesmanship.

"A reminder about these visits: They can be for any number of reasons," wrote Yates. "In some cases, the team is strongly considering drafting the player. Other times, it can give a team a better understanding of a player's medical history, or it can give a team more information on a developmental prospect with little exposure. And yes, sometimes these visits are for teams to create the perception of interest in a player. The predraft process is like a game of chess."
