PIAA swimming: Waynesboro's Eve Phillips closes career with two state medals
LEWISBURG – Eve Phillips ended her high school swimming career just the way she wanted to: on the podium.
The Waynesboro Area senior captured the bronze medal in the 100-yard freestyle with her time of 50.87 at Saturday’s conclusion of the PIAA Class 3A girls championships, held at Bucknell University’s Kinney Natatorium.
“I’m very, very happy with that race,” said Phillips, who nabbed fourth place in the 50 freestyle on Friday. “I took it out like I needed to, and I brought it back hard with all the strength and heart God gave me.”
The medal erases the heartbreak of last season’s swim-off loss to Kaitlyn Landers of Council Rock North for the final place in the ‘A’ final.
“I was very excited to make this ‘A’ final and I’m very happy to get third place in my last swim as a high school swimmer. Breaking a 51 is very exciting. I couldn’t have gone out any better than this.”

Friday, she swam a 23.37 in the 50 free.
“The 50 is such a short race, and it’s so fast. It’s a tough race, but it’s really exciting to swim. It was such a fast heat. They’re all very talented. It was a great race," said Phillips, who has a fifth-place medal from last year in the 50 freestyle and as a freshman was the state runner-up in the 100 butterfly.
Ruth Phillips, Eve Phillips, Rylie Tritle and Mady Barker ended Friday evening with an appearance in the consolation final of the 200 freestyle relay, taking 16th (1:40.36).
Three Trojans swim to individual podium finishes
The Chambersburg boys team had a great start to the competition Friday
Sophomore Amir Tasker led the charge with his seventh-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:40.58).
“I’m very happy,” said Tasker of his medal, his first in an individual event. “I didn’t have expectations that were too high. I knew it was going to be a fast race. I already dropped time in the morning so all I wanted to do tonight was come out and race and have fun, and I did.
“Getting an individual medal was a goal for me this year and I did it. I was here last year, and I didn’t do that well in my individual events, so I was really focusing on improving."
Teammate Cristian Pong followed with eighth place in the 100 butterfly (50.06). It was the first individual medal for the junior, who was hoping for a better time.
“This is very motivating to me,” he said. “The great thing about this sport is that you rise to every challenge, so I mean to do that.”
Chambersburg’s Alex Kaczmark reached the consolation heat in two events. He was 10th in both the 200 freestyle (1:40.42) and 100 butterfly (50.06).
The Trojans’ 200 freestyle relay of Kaczmark, Pong, Ethan White and Tasker was 29th (1:26.94).
Saturday, Cullen McGraw of Chambersburg earned the eighth-place medal in the 500 freestyle (4:39.36).
“This morning was a big drop for me (4:33.77) so I was just happy to be in the final,” said McGraw, a sophomore. “It was fun. I’m glad to be here. This is my first state medal. Last year I didn’t final so I’m really excited that I made a final this year.
“This is definitely motivating. I had a few rough years of swimming, and I feel like I’m getting back into it. I’m really having fun with the sport again, and I can’t wait for next year.”
Tasker made the consolation final of the 100 freestyle, placing 11th (45.83). Keagan Myers finished 13th in diving for the Trojans (396.25 points).
Pong finished 22nd in the 100 backstroke (52.75), and White was 28th in the 500 freestyle (4:47.55) to round out the individual events for Chambersburg.
The foursome of Alex Kaczmark, McGraw, White and Tasker ended the competition with a fifth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:07.72).
For the Chambersburg girls, Margot Ritchie competed in the consolation final of the 100 backstroke, finishing in 10th place (56.61). She finished 21st in the 200 freestyle (1:56.31).
