Patriots Make $69 Million Move to Help Drake Maye
NFL free agency had seen a bit of a lull over the past few days, but all of that silence was blown up on Tuesday.
Just moments after the New York Giants inked a deal to bring in Super Bowl champion quarterback Russell Wilson on a one-year deal, the New England Patriots made an even bigger splash.
As the team looks to contend with new head coach Mike Vrabel and with second-year quarterback Drake Maye, the Pats went out and got the face of the franchise an All-Pro wide receiver. As revealed in a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter, New England signed Stefon Diggs to a three-year deal worth up to $69 million.
"ESPN Sources: Free-agent WR Stefon Diggs reached agreement on a three-year, $69 million deal," wrote Schefter. "Including $26 million guaranteed with the New England Patriots."
The two-time All-Pro has bounced around over the past few years, as this marks his third team in as many years. He started his career with the Minnesota Vikings before being traded to the Buffalo Bills. After four drama-filled seasons with the Bills, he was traded to the Houston Texans before this past season.
Although Diggs came into this past season with six straight years of 1,000+ yards receiving, his streak ended after he tore his ACL in Week 8, finishing with 47 receptions for 496 yards and three touchdowns.
If he can return to his pre-injury form, the Pats' receiving corps just saw a major upgrade. If he is unable to, it could be one of the riskier investments.
Diggs has racked up 857 catches for 10,491 yards and 70 touchdowns in his nine-year NFL career.
