Patriots Make $69 Million Mistake on All-Pro
After swinging and missing on skill-position players all off-season, the New England Patriots have finally secured a wide receiver for quarterback Drake Maye. Unfortunately, they had to pay a hefty price for an injured 31-year-old former All-Pro.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, "Free-agent WR Stefon Diggs reached agreement on a three-year, $69 million deal including $26 million guaranteed with the New England Patriots."

Diggs started eight games for the Houston Texans in 2024, recording 47 receptions, 496 receiving yards, and three touchdown receptions on 64 targets. He added eight yards and one touchdown on the ground before ending the season on injured reserve.
Drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the fifth round (No. 146 overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft, Diggs spent five seasons with the team, totaling 365 receptions, 4,623 yards, and 30 touchdowns. He was then traded to the Buffalo Bills in 2020, where he quickly established himself as one of the league's top wide receivers. Over four seasons with quarterback Josh Allen, Diggs accumulated 445 receptions, 5,372 receiving yards, and 37 touchdowns.
The structure of this deal will be crucial, but on paper, it appears to be a questionable move by New England's front office. With Diggs on the wrong side of 30 and coming off an injury-shortened 2024 season, offering $26 million guaranteed to a declining player seems like a desperate gamble.
It makes sense to surround Maye with better skill-position players, but there had to be better options. This move could end up aging like milk.
