OL David Andrews comments on one of Patriots' greatest mysteries
One of the greatest mysteries in New England Patriots' franchise history is the team's decision to bench former cornerback Malcolm Butler during Super Bowl LII.
Butler was one of the team's top two corners and a 15-game starter during the 2017 season. Yet, in the biggest game of the year against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Patriots made the decision to sit him. That decision came back to haunt them with Eagles backup quarterback Nick Foles throwing for 373 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in a 41-33 upset victory.
Former longtime Patriots team captain David Andrews, who was recently released by the team, appeared on 98.5 The Sports Hub's "Zolak & Bertrand" and commented on the mystery.
"It's an amazing mystery that I can't believe has not come out," said Andrews. "I'm not sure, I don't know exactly what happened. It really wasn't discussed with us. I'll never forget, I remember seeing Malcolm cry during the national anthem. It is such an emotional moment in the Super Bowl, but I remember seeing it, and I was like, 'You know, Malcolm, this is your third one.'
"I do remember sitting on the bench at one time and seeing him on the sideline, and I was like, 'That's weird.' But during the game, we didn't watch the game. We had Dante [Scarnecchia] down there just giving us the business."

Butler has been asked multiple times throughout the years about the benching, but he hasn't really given much information other than chalking it up as a "coach's decision" for former Patriots coach Bill Belichick.
Maybe more will come out someday, but there's also the possibility this is one mystery that will never be solved.
