O'Gorman rolls over Rapid City Stevens to advance to South Dakota girls basketball title game
O’Gorman forward Julia Eggert set the tone for the Knights early in their 58-31 South Dakota girls state basketball tournament semifinal win over Rapid City Stevens on Friday.
The senior was pivotal in O’Gorman building an early lead for the second night in a row. The Raiders started the game playing the Knights tight and extremely physical. O’Gorman countered by dominating the offensive glass to create their separation.
The Knights jumped out to a 7-0 lead and outrebounded Rapid City Stevens 7-1 during that stretch, including five offensive rebounds and six second-chance points. Eggert easily looked the best player on the floor throughout the first quarter, running the break and using her length to finish over defenders. She recorded a quick 11 points, four offensive rebounds, and two steals in the first quarter.
“Julia just always comes out with high energy, high enthusiasm and makes things happen,” O’Gorman girls basketball coach Kent Kolsrud said. “I thought she just did a wonderful job of finishing today. She got some baskets out of transition that were really difficult shots, and she’s just a big senior leader making big plays for us and really got us going early.”
The senior ended the night with a game-high 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting, seven rebounds and four steals.
Sophomore point guard Ruby Moore also had her moments. The South Dakota State commit bailed the O’Gorman offense out of bad possessions with her ability to create off the dribble. Moore scored a stop and pop jumper that sent two Rapid City Stevens defenders flying past her to end the first half. The shot was the perfect way to head into the break and got the Knights crowd on their feet.
Moore finished the game with 13 points and three steals.
“She's done a great job at the point guard spot all year,” Kolsrud said. “Hopping in as a sophomore, replacing a really, really good player in Mahli Abdouch, and she just plays with confidence.”
The Knights defense held Rapid City Stevens to 22% from the field and 16% from three.
O’Gorman will face Brandon Valley in the Class AA state title game Saturday for the second consecutive year.
“We're excited to be in the state championship,” Kolsrud said. “We know it's going to be a heck of a battle, and I know our kids are going to come out excited and ready to play, and they're going to battle and give everything they have.”
