Alyvia Padgett leads Brandon Valley past Washington, back to AA state title game
Brandon Valley junior Alyvia Padgett turned in a dominant performance to lift the Lynx back to the state championship game. Padgett recorded 30 points on 10-for-19 shooting, dished out seven assists, and tallied four rebounds in a narrow 72-56 semifinal win.
The Lynx will face O’Gorman in the state title game for the second year in a row.
“She's a star. That's who she is. She's the ultimate competitor,” Brandon Valley girls basketball coach Mike Zerr said of Padgett. “When you have a kid like that as your floor leader, it's just really fun. It makes my job awesome.”
Padgett helped Brandon Valley dominate the paint against Washington. The Lynx outscored the Warriors 38-14 down low thanks in large part to the junior guard’s ability to weave her way into the paint time and time again and either score herself or set up her teammates. Padgett’s penetration got her to the line 12 times and once she got there, she was nearly automatic. Padgett converted 10-of-12 free throws.
Brandon Valley senior captain Evie Hoff also provided a lift for the Lynx, scoring 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting in 13 minutes.
The Lynx won this game with their defense, holding Washington to 26% shooting and 25% from deep. Brandon Valley forced Washington to commit 26 turnovers and scored 19 points off those turnovers.
For their part, Washington was able to stay in the game because of their aggressiveness getting to the rim. That aggression led to 45 free throws, 21 more than Brandon Valley. Unfortunately, the Warriors converted only 67% of their attempts from the charity stripe.
Washington had three players score in double figures. Grace Peterson and Rylan Kennett each scored 16 points, and Dana Harpe recorded 11.
Brandon Valley will now face O’Gorman for the Class AA state title for the second year in a row.
“They're a special basketball team. We'll have our hands full. They're undefeated and number one and all their streaks and all those things, for so many reasons,” Zerr said. “We'll celebrate this one tonight, and then we'll get right back to it.”
