NYSPHSAA boys basketball tournament returns to Binghamton this week. What you need to know
For the first time in six years, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association boys basketball final four returns to Binghamton this week.
Visions Veterans Memorial Arena will host semifinals and championship games in six classes from March 20 to 23.
The arena was site of the tournament from 2017 to 2019 before it returned to Glens Falls from 2022 to 2024. Glens Falls had hosted since 1981 before the switch to Binghamton.
"We’re excited," Robert Zayas, executive director of the NYSPHSAA, said Tuesday. "I think they did a wonderful job a few years ago when they had the opportunity to host it and take a great deal of pride, and they have a passion for the event.
"So we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to be back in Binghamton for three more years for this prestigious event."
During Sunday's girls and boys regional finals, the arena had an issue with a slippery court, apparently caused by condensation from the ice surface. That was not an issue for Section 4 finals played there March 9.
"We have already addressed the topic with the venue and we’re confident the venue has figured out what the issue was and has corrected it in preparation for our tournament this weekend," Zayas said.
Two teams from Section 4 playing
The 24-team field will include a pair of champions from Section 4 who won regional contests Sunday at Visions Arena.
Binghamton takes on Tappan Zee in Class AA in the first game of 18 across the four days at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The Patriots' program history includes back-to-back state championships in 1985 and 1986.
Speaking of back-to-back, Moravia will vie for a second consecutive state championship in Class C. The Blue Devils take on Section 5's Honeoye at 3:15 p.m. Friday in a semifinal. Moravia won its first state in 2017 at Visions Arena.
The only other returning state champion among the 24 teams is Glens Falls in Class A.
Tickets & Parking
Tickets are online only and available at gofan.co/NYSPHSAA. The cost is $12 per session, with premium seating available for $16.75.
Parking will be available at Mirabito Stadium, on the corner of Henry Street and Chapman Street, before 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Shuttles will leave for the arena every 15 minutes.
After 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and all day Saturday and Sunday, parking will be available for $5 at the Government Plaza ramp at 15 Isbell Street, or Hawley Street ramp at 119 Washington Street.
Limited accessible parking is available for $3 at the arena.
Class AA Matchups
Thursday's semifinals: Section 4 champion Binghamton (18-3, ranked sixth in AA by New York State Sports Writers Association) vs. Section 1's Tappan Zee (23-2, ranked second), 2:30 p.m.
Section 5's Greece Athena (23-2, ranked third) vs. Section 2's Niskayuna (19-5, ranked seventh), 4:15.
Friday's final: Semifinal winners, 6 p.m.
Class AAA Matchups
Thursday's semifinals: Section 9's Newburgh Free Academy (13-7, ranked 17th in AAA) vs. Section 2's Shaker (21-3, ranked 12th), 6 p.m.
Section 6's Jamestown (19-3, ranked 11th) vs. Section 8's Port Washington (20-4, ranked 13th), 7:45.
Friday's final: Semifinal winners, 7:45 p.m.
Class D Matchups
Friday's semifinals: Section 11's Bridgehampton (21-1, ranked second in Class D) vs. Section 2's Loudonville Christian (16-6, ranked sixth), 10 a.m.
Section 6's Panama (21-2, ranked first) vs. Section 3's Sackets Harbor (20-4, ranked third), 11:45.
Saturday's final: Semifinal winners, 6 p.m.
Class C Matchups
Friday's semifinals: Section 1's Tuckahoe (17-6, ranked ninth in Class C) vs. Section 2's Berne-Knox-Westerlo (24-0, ranked first), 1:30 p.m.
Section 4's Moravia (21-1, ranked second) vs. Section 5's Honeoye (24-1, ranked third), 3:15.
Saturday's final: Semifinal winners, 7:45 p.m.
Class B Matchups
Saturday's semifinals: Section 1's Woodlands (23-2, ranked second in Class B) vs. Section 8's Carle Place (15-8, ranked 14th), 10 a.m.
Section 5's World of Inquiry (22-3, ranked fourth) vs. Section 3's Marcellus (22-4, ranked first), 11:45.
Sunday's final: Semifinal winners, 10 a.m.
Class A Matchups
Saturday's semifinals: Section 1's Byram Hills (24-2, ranked second) vs. Section 11's Mount Sinai (22-2, ranked third), 1:30 p.m.
Section 5's Wayne (23-2, ranked fourth) vs. Section 2's Glens Falls (25-0, ranked first), 3:15.
Sunday's final: Semifinal winners, 11:45 a.m.
