Notre Dame star could go high in WNBA Draft

Notre Dame guard Sonia Citron could go second in the upcoming WNBA draft.

That might be considered ironic, since her former teammate Olivia Miles was likely the number 2 pick until Miles chose to remain in college but also leave the Fighting Irish via the transfer portal.

Connecticut's Paige Bueckers, newly crowned as a national champion over the weekend, is likely to be picked first overall.

The draft is next week in New York City.

A USA Today mock draft has Citron headed to the Seattle Storm. Notre Dame's disappointment in the NCAA Tournament shouldn't hurt Citron's resume, and the Storm have a need at the position. Citron averaged 14.2 points per game, 5.4 rebounds per game and 1.9 steals per game in 32 games this season.

The bad news for the Irish is that Miles and Citron will be leaving -- though Hannah Hidalgo will return next season. The good news is this: Despite a disappointing NCAA Tournament flame-out, the 2024-2025 Fighting Irish had such depth that when one future number 2 pick ducked out of the draft, she was replaced by a teammate.
