Nick Nurse gives latest on Sixers stars Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey
It has been almost a month since the Philadelphia 76ersruled Joel Embiid out for the season after playing in only 19 games. The Sixers had ruled the big fella medically unable to play after dealing with knee issues all season long.
As the Sixers continue their 2024-25 season, they have 11 games left, one has to wonder what the plan of treatment is for Embiid. For example, the Sixers had a plan for Paul George as he will be re-evaluated in six weeks. There isn't anything yet for Embiid.
"There's not an update yet on that," coach Nick Nurse told reporters in Atlanta. "There's still discussions, but again, I think it's probably not that far away. I don't know what the timeline is to get a decision made. I think, again, there's lots of people he’s seeing and talking to lots of information that they're gathering, and just want to absolutely be as thorough as possible, and get every option on the table and then figure out where they go from there."
One has to believe the Sixers and Embiid will find a plan to make everything work to get the 2023 MVP winner ready for the 2025-26 season. The goal is to get him ready for the next season and year 2 of the Big 3 with George and Tyrese Maxey.
Speaking of Maxey, the Sixers had hopes that he would return on this trip, but that won't be the case as Nurse confirmed that the All-Star guard is unlikely to play against the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday.
“It doesn’t look good,” Nurse explained. “I do expect him back, though. I don’t think he’s going to make it for today or tomorrow, I’ve been told.”
However, there is hope that he will return at some point in this final stretch of the season and there is a reason why he wants him to play.
"Again, I keep saying it's the season, and he's a good player," Nurse said of Maxey. "He's a good young player, and there's games to play and if he can do it, healthy, he should do it."
The Sixers will have 10 games left following the matchup with the Pelicans on Monday.
