Great news for fans of the Denver Broncos' throwback uniform: we could see it more often going forward.
Last season, the Broncoswore their throwbacks twice and their alternate uniform once as the NFL allowed three total games of either a throwback or alternate design. At the Annual League Meeting in Florida this week, the uniform rules were changed to now allow teams to wear an alternate or throwback up to four times per season.
"I don’t know if you guys heard, but we just refreshed the policy, and so now we’ll be able to wear alternate uniforms four times during the regular season," team president Damani Leech announced Monday. "So that will be great."
Denver could now, in theory, wear the throwback uniform three times and the alternate once (or twice each). The league has also relaxed its alternate helmet rule. Last season, the Broncos were only allowed to wear their white helmet with their alternate navy jersey. That rule has now been changed.
"[We have m]ore opportunities to wear the throwbacks, but also more versatility with the helmets," Leech said. "So as an example, we could wear our white helmets with orange-on-orange pants and jerseys. So things like that will just add more flexibility to the closet and hopefully be exciting for the players but also for the fans.”
Both changes will be welcomed by fans in Denver who have been clamoring for more throwback games and the opportunity to wear the white helmet with different jerseys. This is one rule change that should have universal support from NFL fans.
